10 Million Shoppers Expected in London's West End

10 million shoppers are expected to flock to London’s West End over the next four weeks, as over 40 West End retailers launch their summer sales. With anything from 20%-75% coming off selected items through select stores over the next two weeks, Saturday 27 June – pay day weekend is expected to be one of the busiest days of the summer sales season, dubbed ‘Golden Saturday’.
In anticipation of the influx of requests from the 10 million shoppers expected to visit the West End for the summer sales rush, including International and Euro shoppers taking advantage of the favourable exchange rates and the domestic shoppers enjoying ‘staycations’, New West End Company will re-launch the West End Sales Watch.
First launched in December 2008, this online service found at www.westendlondon.com/sales provides accurate information on all the sales and offers being hosted by some of 600 stores in the West End. The West End Sales Watch will be updated daily, flagging up some of the best bargains of the day.
Says Jace Tyrrell, spokesperson for New West End Company, “When we launched the West End Sales Watch in December of last year, the demand was so high the site we specially created crashed. This time we are fully prepared for a massive influx of requests and have pulled out all the stops to ensure that shoppers will be able to see what offers will be available across their favourite West End stores.”
“Sales are coming earlier each year ten years ago summer sales were in August. However these sales have been planned and are not a bid to clear summer stocks. Retailers had anticipated launching their sales in June, as the current economy meant that savvy shoppers are really looking for a bargain.”
Retailers going on sale this week (w/c 15 June 2009) include Selfridges, Banana Republic, Browns, Aquascutum, Debenhams, Gap, Fortnum & Mason, Gucci and Liberty.
