Today marks a milestone as we move into the next phase of reopening West End businesses and welcoming back our valued colleagues and customers. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the incredible resilient and stoic actions of you, our members and partners, during the lockdown period.
To name a few, Burberry used its global supply chain network to fast-track the delivery of 100,000 surgical masks to the NHS and repurposed its trench coat factory in Yorkshire to make 100,000 non-surgical masks and gowns, Claridge’s had to close its doors to its usual international guests during the crisis, but it opened them to NHS workers, allowing health workers to be closer to their workplace while keeping their families safe, and John Lewis and Partners supplied NHS workers with gifts that would make their breaks more comfortable, donating items such as pillows, phone chargers, eye masks, and hand cream, as well as 50,000 Easter treats, to hospitals across the country. These are just three of the many extraordinary examples of how West End businesses have shown their compassion and support in the face of such adversity.
As well as our businesses, great efforts have been made at a local, national and global level to really support our colleagues, customers and communities. We have put together a short video to showcase the phenomenal and utterly inspiring efforts of the entire West End community.
So as we turn to reopening, we are all united in that our top priority across the West End is the safety of our returning colleagues and customers. We have worked closely with you, our members and partners, alongside Westminster City Council and Transport for London and I would like to offer my thanks to you all for your support and hard work in helping us deliver the safety measures now in place across our district. Over the coming weeks and months ahead we will continue to adapt and evolve these measures as we move through the pandemic cycle.
While we know that the challenge is far from over, for the immediate week, we are focussing on the here and now, ensuring that your business and your teams have sufficient operational support to ensure a safe and sustainable reopening. With this in mind, from this morning, we have additional security officers and overnight dog patrols to ensure your stores are secure, and we are continuing to run our clean team at full capacity, with social distancing ambassadors working to hand out PPE to customers, offer advice to the public, and ensure hand sanitisation points are kept replenished. Additionally, we also have street sanitisation operatives who will be ensuring street furniture and pavements are sanitised and deep cleaned.
Our efforts won’t stop here, and over the coming weeks and months, working strategically with our members and partners, we will continue to push for policies and measures that will support your businesses on the road to recovery in what will be a challenging few months ahead and beyond.
One thing that this unprecedented and unyeilding crisis has shown us, is that we are stronger and better together. Our collaborative efforts and tireless work are a true testament to the West End, and I am immensely proud to count each and everyone of you as a part of this world-renowned, resilient and unwavering community. On behalf of the full team and Board here at New West End Company, I want to offer you my heartfelt thanks, and I look forward to continuing our partnership as we move to the next phase. We truly are better together.
Wishing all our West End businesses a safe and sustainable reopening.
