New West End Update: Property

Earlier this week we welcomed our senior property members to our Half Year Property Update at One Heddon Street, where we explored activity throughout the West End over the past six months.

We were joined by Susanne Afra, Head of Programme for the Oxford Street District at Westminster City Council, who gave an update on the progress of the Oxford Street District Transformation, including a timeline for the project and changes that will positively impact the local area, including improving cycle and public transport routes, pedestrian access and traffic flow. For the full presentation click here.

Also speaking at the event was James Bidwell, Chairman of Springwise, the global innovation intelligence agency, who spoke about how the fast pace of change is impacting retail. He reiterated how important experiential retail is in the current climate, and how urban technologies are contributing to developing smart cities and retail destinations.

We also updated the group on our activities over the past six months. From successfully securing a £600,000 Investment by London & Partners for a domestic marketing campaign and Mark Wilde, CEO of Crossrail presenting an update on the Elizabeth line at our board meeting to the launch of Placemaking schemes such as the Hanover Square transformation and our Preferred Supplier Scheme aimed at reducing commercial traffic in the West End. Looking forward, we have an exciting and busy six months ahead. The summer months are extremely popular with international visitors and we are focussing our advocacy efforts on extending tax-free shopping to EU states, and the possibility of extended Sunday trading hours, along with the expansion of Chinese payment services in stores across the area. All these initiatives will make sure that we are maximising the opportunity to engage with our key markets, both internationally and domestically.

We also heard from James Cooksey, Director of Central London at The Crown Estate and the new Chair of New West End Company’s Property Steering Group. James shared his vision for the West End, as well as giving insight into New West End Company and The Crown Estate’s partnership and work across Regent Street and the wider West End.

Huge thanks to our speakers and all who attended. Here’s to another successful six months!
