At the end of May, we hosted senior Cabinet Office and Government retail policy officials at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for a tour of the West End. During the tour and presentation we gave an overview of the district, how it operates and its significance to the retail sectors and wider UK economy.
This was an excellent opportunity to discuss with BEIS officials the national policy issues that are affecting retail across London and the wider UK including the unfair burden of business rates on high street businesses, and how Brexit may impact retailers from a customer, staffing and supply chain perspective.
We also discussed the changing trading landscape, looking at the Sunday trading regulations, looking at exempting London International Centres from the restrictions. Global Blue also invited us to their Tax Free Shopping Lounge, where we heard more about the operations, as well as looking into the digitalisation of the system and extending it to EU member states post-Brexit.
We would like to thank Mulberry, The Crown Estate, Global Blue, Fenwick, John Lewis Partnership for supporting us on the tour and to Selfridges for hosting lunch and taking us on an insightful tour of their world class store.
