Now Launched: The Business of Recycling Pilot Programme

Prepare your business for the new business recycling Regulations

New legislation is coming soon that will require all businesses, healthcare establishments and academic institutions to separate recyclable materials including glass, cans/tins, plastic, paper and card and food waste from general waste. As this will be a regulatory requirement, it’s likely that an enforcement officer will undertake checks in future and ask to see evidence that businesses are complying with the new rules.

Westminster is one of five areas to pilot a new business support programme to inform and prepare businesses for the new regulations. We are working with WRAP – a global sustainability charity – and Westminster City Council to deliver the pilot, which will take place for 10 weeks between 16 February and 21 April 2023.

The pilot aims to:

  • Promote the benefits of recycling – increasing business recycling rates, whilst reducing waste disposal costs, saving energy, conserving natural resources and helping to protect the environment.
  • Provide support for businesses in target areas through dedicated Business Advisors to help you understand how the regulations affect your business, what you need to do and what resources are available to help your business.
  • The Business Advisors will be making store visits and calling businesses over the 10 week pilot period. If you would like to pre-arrange a meeting with one of WRAP's Business Advisors please email info@newwestend.com.

In order to promote the programme, WRAP has created a dedicated Business of Recycling website that includes recycling guidance to help ensure businesses are ready for the changes, a waste calculator tool and free downloadable communications resources to help businesses engage with staff and encourage recycling in the workplace.

Collectively with WRAP and Westminster City Council, we will monitor the impact and results of the pilot, and the findings will be used to help shape and improve the final content of the Business of Recycling website before it is rolled out nationally.
